# Set up billing

The order to set up billing in, from your Stripe keys to the first test subscription, with a step-by-step guide for each part.

Billing works once five things are in place, in this order: your Stripe account is connected, your currencies and products exist, a plan has a published version, a pricing group puts it on your pricing page, and a test checkout goes through. Each part needs the one before it: the **Billing** menu offers plans only once Stripe is connected, and a plan version can be created only once your organization has a billing currency.

Use Stripe's **test mode** for all of it: checkouts take Stripe's test cards, and no money moves.
